In marketing, we often talk about opportunity, be it, growth, revenue, new markets, etc.
But buyers approach decisions from their own perspective. And more often than not, they’re thinking about risk.
Will this firm really understand our business?
Can they deliver what they’ve promised?
How will this recommendation be viewed internally?
What happens if this project doesn’t succeed?
Procuring services and solutions has always carried an element of personal accountability. I’ve definitely felt this from the buying side. Choosing the wrong vendor can have meaningful consequences, both commercially and professionally. That means buyers aren’t always looking for the most exciting option.
They’re looking for the option that gives them the greatest confidence.
And this is why there’s a growing conversation right now around the importance of trust.
Much of marketing’s work is still built around attracting attention. But, that only takes buyers so far. Trust is what moves them forward. That’s why some of the most interesting marketing at the moment doesn’t immediately look like lead generation at all. Thought leadership, client stories, executive visibility – they all perform the same function: reduce perceived risk.
Every interaction helps buyers reassure themselves that they can ‘trust’ these people with their immediate challenge.
The firms that understand this invest consistently in their marketing, rather than only when pipeline slows. They encourage their leaders to share their thinking publicly. They understand that credibility is built over time, rather than during a single campaign.
As AI changes the way we all discover information, this principle becomes even more important. Technology can help firms become more visible. Only trust helps them become more selectable.
So, my question for you is, how is your marketing activity reducing uncertainty for the people ultimately responsible for saying yes?
Because remember, long before your buyers are looking for the best solution, they’re looking for the safest decision they can confidently make.
